My love for dogs has been an enduring one. Way back to the time I was a baby in a crib with the family GSD Sergeant keeping watch over me, I’ve enjoyed the company, security, and antics of having a loyal, loving canine by my side. I have owned many dogs over the years, with a variety of breeds and backgrounds (a Chow/Beagle cross, 3 Rottweilers, 2 Heeler cross rescues, a Boxer, and last but not least, dozens of American Bulldogs). As mentioned, I’ve always had an affinity for the large guardian breeds. My Uncle Buddy’s female GSD Princess, and my Dad’s GSD/Husky cross Tasha have a big place in my heart.
In regards to training, over my lifetime I have read every training book I could get my hands on, from the Koehler Method to Ray McSoley’s Dog Tales. Then I came across Ian Dunbar’s Sirius Dog Training video, and knew it was something special. Most of my techniques come from his teachings, methods, and research. In a nutshell he uses positive reinforcement, lure reward training and classical conditioning so the dog comes to enjoy doing what you want them to do, rather than forcing them to do it, as is the case in so many other dog training philosophies. Taking a friendly/rewarding but firm approach rather than an adversarial/punishment approach.
On the other end of the spectrum is the pleasant but completely ineffective and sometimes dangerous purely positive training. The problem with that approach is that you are teaching your dog that there are no consequences to poor choices and actions. That is not how the world works. But those consequences need not be cruel or harsh physical punishment. A firm word, cessation of an enjoyed activity, or a time out are a much more kind, effective, and efficient way to communicate with your dog.
Seeing the horrible results of dog trainers from both philosophical extremes culminating in the dog needing to be euthanized due to the injury or death of another dog or human has motivated me to reach out and help equip others with the tools to train their dog to be obedient, while enhancing rather than damaging their bond and friendship.
